As the 4th of July approaches we are mindful of how blessed we are to live in “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Men and women long to be free and not under bondage to anyone. In America we are free to work in the place of our choosing and live wherever we desire. We live in a country of many freedoms and it behooves us as individuals and as a nation to carefully guard and protect those freedoms.

Our national freedoms are indeed precious, but of even greater value is the spiritual freedom that is afforded us through the gospel of Jesus Christ. The scriptures declare, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8(36) The greatest freedom is that which sets us free from the bondage of sin.

We read in Acts 8(8), “And there was great joy in that city.” This great joy was experienced in the city of Samaria as Philip preached Christ unto them. The delivering and healing power of the Lord was manifest as the gospel message went forth.

Liberty is defined as “freedom from slavery, captivity, or any other form of arbitrary control.” Liberty in its highest form is found in the presence of God. “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” II Corinthians 3(17)

May we cherish our freedoms as Americans and even more our spiritual freedoms as children of our Heavenly Father!
